Juneteenth Marks Freedom Message in 1865
Maricopa County said that on June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with a “long-overdue message” that freedom had finally come.
The county said that more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were told they were free, which it described as the beginning of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day.
Maricopa County said Juneteenth is rooted in the pursuit of self-determination, citizenship, and true democracy. It said the day represents hope, strength, and resolve, and that the county is celebrating that moment.
In its message, Maricopa County said freedom is more than a word and described it as a collective responsibility.
