Tribute to K-9 Murph: Heroic Service Remembered
Staff Report / tempelocal.org
The Tempe Police Department is paying tribute to K-9 Murph, who served until his end of watch on November 21, 1986. Murph joined the department as a K-9 in February 1981 and worked alongside his handler, Officer C. Araiza. Together, they participated in 336 building searches, 348 area searches, and 24 narcotic searches, leading to the arrest of 45 felony suspects. Their dedication earned them eight departmental commendations.
On the day of his passing, an armed suspect who had previously shot a Scottsdale Police Officer and injured several civilians fled into Tempe. During the pursuit, this suspect kidnapped 6-year-old Robbie Hughes. Despite being injured by gunfire, Sgt. Ralph Tranter was able to locate and rescue the boy. Officer Araiza sent Murph into the residence to confront the suspect while other officers attempted entry from the front.
Tragically, K-9 Murph was shot by the suspect during this operation and succumbed to his injuries. His actions contributed significantly to the efforts of Tempe officers in apprehending the armed individual and ensuring the safety of the young hostage.
